One of Ireland’s most acclaimed photographers during the Troubles died today. Brendan McCann died in Belfast Mater Hospital after a short illness. He was 75. In a career spanning over 50 years, he covered some of the darkest hours in Northern Ireland’s turbulent history.
McCann began his career in his native Omagh at the Ulster Herald newspaper. He also worked for the Dublin-based Irish Press newspaper and then moved on to Independent Newspapers in Belfast where he served for over 40 years. During his career, he was honoured by his peers with many awards. Mr McCann retired during 1990.
